Casey’s Law Kentucky – What You Need To Know
No one wants to lose a loved one to drug addiction. Sadly, it’s happened to too many families.
One of them was the family of Matthew “Casey” Wethington. Casey loved playing a variety of sports, the guitar, and video games. At least, he did until a substance addiction changed him. Casey died at the age of 23 as a result of a heroin overdose.
Casey’s Law was passed in Kentucky in 2004. It gives families a way to intervene when they see someone they love spiraling downward as a result of substance abuse.
At Renew Recovery, we want to be part of the process of helping your loved one become healthy and happy again. Call 866-840-4719 to learn how we can support them and you.
Understand What You Can Do
When used effectively, Casey’s Law can lead to involuntary treatment for addiction. However, there are specific steps that must be followed.
In general, involuntary treatment can be part of sentencing after someone has been convicted of a crime while under the influence of a substance. Yet, many people with substance addictions are not arrested even if they do commit crimes either to pay for their addiction or because of distorted thinking that is a result of their addiction.
Through Casey’s Law, you can appeal to the courts for treatment for someone who may not be able to recognize that they need help. If the courts do order treatment, the type of treatment can vary from intensive recovery to detoxification.
You should be aware that under the law the petitioner (the person who files the action in court) is responsible for the costs of the legal process and the treatment. The petitioner also is responsible for finding the treatment center. You can read the law in full here.
